Modi all praise for home minister - Deccan Herald News Service
New Delhi, Feb 8, 2010 : Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who at the drop of a hat goes ballistic with any policy issue that the Congress-led UPA government proposes, on Sunday effusively praised the Centre's counter-terrorism measures. Speaking on the sidelines a meeting of chief ministers on internal security, Modi, for a change, complimented Home Minister P Chidambaram and Home Secretary G K Pillai on their approach to battling terrorism. "The response of the home minister and home secretary has been swift and positive whenever there has been a demand from the states," Modi said. He even held back his punches when a response was sought on the Centre's rejection of the Gujarat Control of Organised Crime (GUJCOC) Bill on the ground that it has failed the test of natural justice and human rights.
Reacting to a query on the GUJCOC Bill, Modi said there were only two ways to deal with security related issues. "First, we need modern weapons and, secondly, increase the strength of security forces. We believe in democracy; we believe in human rights. So, it is also necessary to strengthen the laws," Modi said.
Asked about Modi's positive comments about him, Chidambaram said if Modi agreed, it meant all states were bound together on matters of internal security. But the home minister defended the Centre's rejection of GUJCOC.
"Not a single discordant note emerged in the conference. The whole nation is responding in the spirit of unity. It is in itself a big achievement... a message to all those who challenge India's internal security," Chidambaram said after the meeting.
Chhatisgarh's BJP Chief Minister Raman Singh also praised the home minister for tackling terrorism effectively.
