Vedike condems BJP leaders' reactions - TNN / The Times of India
MANGALORE, 7 February 2010 : The Karnataka Komu Souharda Vedike, while welcoming a move by Justice B K Somasekhara to make the contents of his interim report on attacks on religious places in the state in September 2008 public, has expressed dismay at his holding saffron outfits responsible for the attacks.
K L Ashok, state secretary of the vedike, addressing reporters here on Saturday said the reactions of top BJP leaders to the interim report, namely home minister V S Acharya and party president K S Eshwarappa was not befitting their status. Ashok said the observation of Eshwarappa that the interim report was influenced and dictated by a "foreign priest", is condemnable.
Ashok said that a report by a senior police official has blamed four local police officers for the attacks. However, he wondered if the report by an ADGP did not reach the Commission. The state government bowing to public pressure at that point in time registered cases against the top leadership of the saffron outfit, but later withdrew the same, he said, adding that 468 cases filed against Christians in the aftermath of the attack are still pending before the courts.
Demands of the vedike
* Criminal cases should be booked against all organizations and workers named in the interim report as well as senior police and revenue officials.
* False cases foisted against 'innocent' Christians as mentioned in the interim report should be revoked.
* The governor should intervene to dismiss the state government in wake of deterioration of law and order situation in the state and recurrent attacks on minorities.
* Suggestion of the Commission in its interim report to implement steps to restore communal amity from the grassroots level should be taken up immediately.
* The vedike office-bearers to meet in Mangalore on Sunday to discuss future course of action on means to press for implementation of recommendations in the interim report.
